Spaz Reviews: Shady Lady - Ann Aguirre

My review of Shady Lady by Ann Aguirre, the third novel in the Corine Solomon series, is up at WLP! Join me!
I feel the need to state that I had a love-hate relationship with the last book in the series, Hell Fire. The love triangle with Corine, Jesse, and Chance and the tension it caused really exhausted me. Even though I have been waiting for this new release, I was nervous to see where it would go. With that being said… I. loved. this. book. Shady Lady is a masterpiece in dark and descriptive narrative. From colorful streets in Mexico to hot, creepy jungles in Peru. Ms. Aguirre takes you to places in your imagination only an expert story teller can take you. There is one scene that involves demonic monkeys were I was truly spooked… and the scenes like that just kept on coming! Continue reading...

Spaz Cycles: 180 Miles for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society!

It's Friday the 15th, aaand I'm off! I am traveling to Houston to do the MS150 Houston-Austin 180 mile bike ride. I am riding to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society research on the Saint Arnold Brewing bike team. I decided to do this ride 6 months ago when my friend, KK, who has done this for several years, motivated me to go for it. I've gone through a lot of extreme emotions, have crazy bruises on all of my limbs, blisters on my hands, bruised pubic bones (numb vag is no laughing matter, ya'll!), I've had IT ALL. And it's all been to toughen me up for this ride!! It's now or never!

We are riding from Houston to LaGrange for 100 miles on Saturday 4/16. Mr. Spaz is meeting me at the camp site for support, and is camping with us overnight, yay!
After camping overnight in LaGrange, on Sunday 4/17 we bring it home for another 90 miles to the Finish in Austin!

If you'd like to sponsor my ride, your donation goes directly to MS Research!

Multiple sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease that affects people in many ways. It could be paralysis one day, loss of vision the next or impaired memory the day after. Living with multiple sclerosis means living with uncertainty. There is no cure, but there is hope!! I am riding for my Father-In-Law, Rodney Elliott, who has been living with MS for 10 years.

Thanks everyone for putting up with my endless tweets and living out loud over this event. And most of all, thank you for the support!

HUGE ginormous to my MOM for taking over not only Baby Mouse duty, but ALSO for staying at our house and taking care of the doglets. I love you, Mom!

And have NO fear! I have informed my riding buddies that if I fall off in to a ditch somewhere still attached to my bike, they have to take pictures. :P That will make for some good blog content. See you on the other side!!

Spaz Reviews: Grave Witch - Kalayna Price

My latest review is up at WLP of Grave Witch by Kalayna Price

Alex Grave is a private investigator for her own company Tongues for the Dead. She uses her abilities as a grave witch - the power to raise and speak to the dead - from assisting family members seeking closure with a dead loved one, to helping the police solve a homicide, and everything in between. She agrees to help her sister, whom she is somewhat estranged from, and quickly finds herself in the middle of death and mayhem.

Grave Witch is the first book in Kalayna Price's Alex Craft series. There were elements of the protagonist, Alexis, that made her completely relatable as well as likable. One touch that I really liked was that every time she raises a shade her eyesight goes wonky and she becomes nearly blind. She is completely vulnerable with her limited sight and that gave her such an element of relatability to me, as someone who wears very very strong contacts. I could really relate to her feeling of helplessness during those periods, when things are happening all around her and she can't freaking see! I felt right there with her in her confusion and frustration. Also, I liked that she was down and out broke, also another element that makes her easy to empathize with. Continue Reading...

Spaz & Baby Mouse

This is a cross-post from WLP's site.

On Sunday, I discovered that a Momma Mouse had babies underneath the grill cover on our porch. The dogs found it first and killed one of the babies and then ran away the Momma Mouse. I found this little baby was very alive. I recreated the nest as best as I could, and placed the baby mouse in it with the hopes the mom would come back…. She never did. I gave it two hours because that’s how often baby mice have to eat. After agonizing over what to do, I made the best decision I could live with. I went and got kitten replacement milk, an eye dropper, and Baby Mouse now resides in a critter cage over a heating pad. I am going to try my best to be a surrogate mom until Baby Mouse can open his eyes and eventually live on his own. Baby Mouse must be fed every 2 hours, and I have to rub its belly to help it "relieve" itself. I may, or may not, have him at work under my desk in his critter carrier with a heating pad so I can take him outside to my car and feed him every 2 hours (I am sure everyone at work thinks I'm doing drugs).

Thank goodness for all the resources on the internetz and the youtubez!

I am tweeting his (or her) updates using the hashtag #BabyMouse

Spaz's Top 5 UF & PNR Auto-Buy Books for April

My "auto-buy" Top 5 UF/PNR books for the month of April! These are 4 of my most favorite authors, I'm so excited for these releases!

April 5th
Shady Lady (Corine Solomon #3) - Ann Aguirre
I'd spent my whole life settling, trying not to attract attention, and generally doing whatever it took to keep other people happy. I didn't want to do that again. Not when I was finally comfortable in my own skin. Sure, there were certain challenges, like a drug lord who wanted me dead, and the fact that I owed a demon a debt that he could call due at any moment. But everybody's got problems, right?
Whenever Corine Solomon touches an object, she immediately knows its history. But her own future concerns her more and more. Now back in Mexico, she's running her pawnshop and trying to get a handle on her strange new powers, for she might need them. And soon.
Then former ally Kel Ferguson walks through her door. Heavily muscled and tattooed, Kel looks like a convict but calls himself a holy warrior. This time, he carries a warning for Corine: the Montoya cartel is coming for her--but they don't just pack automatic weapons. The Montoyas use warlocks, shamans, voodoo priests--anything to terminate trouble. And Corine has become enemy number one...

April 5th
Magic on the Hunt (Allie Beckstrom #6) - Devon Monk
In the secret lockup of the Authority, the council that decides what can and can't be done with magic, an undead magic user has possessed one of the prisoners. He wants his freedom-and then some. Now Allie Beckstrom and her lover, Zayvion, are the first line of defense against the chaos he's about to unleash on the city of Portland...

April 12th
Enclave (Razorland #1) - Ann Aguirre
New York City has been decimated by war and plague, and most of civilization has migrated to underground enclaves, where life expectancy is no more than the early 20's. When Deuce turns 15, she takes on her role as a Huntress, and is paired with Fade, a teenage Hunter who lived Topside as a young boy. When she and Fade discover that the neighboring enclave has been decimated by the tunnel monsters—or Freaks—who seem to be growing more organized, the elders refuse to listen to warnings. And when Deuce and Fade are exiled from the enclave, the girl born in darkness must survive in daylight, in the ruins of a city whose population has dwindled to a few dangerous gangs. As the two are guided by Fade’s long-ago memories, they face dangers, and feelings, unlike any they’ve ever known.

April 26th
Mercy Burns (Myth & Magic #2) - Keri Arthur
Mercy Reynolds is a reporter in the San Francisco Bay area, but she’s also more—and less—than human. Half woman, half air dragon, she’s a “draman”—unable to shift shape but still able to unleash fiery energy. Now something will put her powers to the test. Mercy’s friend Rainey has enlisted her help to solve her sister’s murder. Then a horrible accident claims Rainey’s life, leaving Mercy only five days to find the killer: If Mercy fails, according to dragon law, Rainey’s soul will be doomed to roam the earth for eternity. But how can Mercy help when she herself is a target? With nowhere else to turn, she must join forces with a sexy stranger—the mysterious man they call “Muerte,” or death itself, who’s as irresistible as he is treacherous. But can even Death keep Mercy alive for long enough to find her answers?

April 26th
Born of Shadows (The League #4) - Sherrilyn Kenyon
Just when you think you have it all figured out, life belts you to the ground. And when Caillen discovers a truth he'd never suspected about himself, everything in his life is turned on its head.
Desideria has a secret of her own- one that could end her life if anyone ever learns it. The last thing she expects is to meet a criminal in her sheltered world never mind find herself marooned on a hostile colony with him while his enemies try to kill them both.
And as they struggle to survive, her father's favorite curse resonates. "May you get exactly what you want and live long enough to regret it."
